artist's statement
I have been super interested in digital collaging through Photoshop. I wanted to do a project that uses mixed media collaging to make four spreads. I make collages regularly, and I find it is a great way to look back on a memory, but also through the process of making the collage, I begin to really savor and appreciate my time in that moment.
With every assignment we have done for class, whether that was masking, the object selection tool or AI generative fill, I found myself always thinking back to my collages and how these tools could be used towards creating them digitally.
Since I wanted to have them mirror a kind of journalistic style, I was thinking about a few distinct but connected stories I could tell. I decided to do the four works on my travel experience this past summer. Usually, I do not travel a lot. I travel once every summer with my cousins and we go to the same place, which is really fun and I love it but I already have other works of art revolving around this special place. I have a video essay, poems, photography and even some short stories. However, this summer I traveled to many new places with friends and family. I have a multitude of pictures but I have yet put them to greater use. I also feel like through a multimedia collage, that I could incorporate momentos or symbols that were important for each trip.
In my final works, there are two of Japan, one of New York, and one of Orcas Island. Each spread has two pages, the left page embodying a more traditional collage style of stacking photos onto one another, and the right side being more artistic and almost more like cover art.
